So, the other day I was watching a Formula 1 race, and they kept showing the speeds in kilometers per hour. I’m more used to miles per hour, you know, being from the States and all. It got me thinking, “How fast are they actually going in mph?” So, I decided to do a little experiment.
First, I grabbed my phone and opened up the calculator app. I remembered there was this one time I went to Canada, and I had to do a similar conversion. Back then, I just googled it, but this time, I wanted to figure it out myself.
I started with a random speed I saw on the screen: 77 kilometers per hour. Now, I kinda vaguely recalled that 1 kilometer is roughly 0.62 miles. Don’t ask me where I learned that, probably some random trivia somewhere. So, I multiplied 77 by 0.62.
- Multiply 77 by 0.62
- Got the result: 47.74
Boom! There it was: 47.74. That’s the speed in miles per hour. I was pretty proud of myself, figured it out without any help, haha. I mean it’s not rocket science, but it felt good to know that if I’m ever in a country that uses kilometers, I can quickly do the math in my head… well with my calculator.
Then, I did a couple more just for fun, you know, to make sure I really got it. I tried a few higher speeds, like 150 km/h and 200 km/h. Each time, I just multiplied by that 0.62 number, and it worked out perfectly.
The Result
So yeah, that was my little adventure in unit conversion. It’s not exactly a groundbreaking discovery, but hey, it’s something I learned, and I thought it was kinda cool. Now, whenever I see speeds in kilometers per hour, I can easily convert them to miles per hour and impress all my friends…or maybe not. But it’s a fun thing to know!
