So, today I’m gonna talk about “perfect game” versus “no hitter” in baseball. It all started when I got into this argument with my buddy about what’s a bigger deal in baseball, a perfect game or a no-hitter. I’m a huge baseball fan, you know, and I always thought a perfect game was the ultimate achievement.
I went straight to figuring this out. First, I grabbed my phone and looked up the definitions. Turns out, a perfect game is when a pitcher doesn’t let any batter reach base – no hits, no walks, no errors, nothing. A no-hitter, on the other hand, is just when the pitcher doesn’t give up any hits, but the other team can still get on base through walks or errors or whatever.
Next, I tried to remember some famous games. I mean, I’ve watched a ton of baseball in my life, but I couldn’t recall specific perfect games off the top of my head. No-hitters, yeah, I could think of a few. But perfect games? That was tougher.
Then, I decided to do some real digging. I found this old list of all the perfect games in MLB history. There were only like, 24 of them ever! That’s crazy rare. Then I looked at no-hitters, and there were way, way more. I mean, several happen every season.
- Perfect games are super rare. Like, only 24 in the history of Major League Baseball.
- No-hitters are more common. Still a big deal, but they happen a lot more often.
- Perfect game means no one reaches base. No hits, no walks, no errors, zip.
- No-hitter just means no hits. Guys can still get on base other ways.
My findings:
After seeing all that, it was pretty clear. A perfect game is definitely way harder to pull off. It’s like the holy grail for pitchers. I told my buddy all this, and he had to agree. He was like, “Yeah, I guess you’re right. A perfect game is a bigger deal.” I felt pretty good, you know, getting him to see it my way.
So yeah, that’s my little adventure into the world of perfect games and no-hitters. It was a fun little debate and I learned something new along the way. It’s stuff like this that makes me love baseball so much. Always something new to learn and talk about.
