Today, I felt like diving into the world of golf, specifically the PGA Major winners. I’ve always been a casual fan, but I wanted to know more about the legends who have conquered these prestigious tournaments.
First, I started by looking up what the four major championships actually are. Turns out they’re The Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, and The Open Championship. Cool, got it.
Then, I wanted a list of all the winners. This was a bit trickier. I found some websites, but they weren’t very user-friendly. Finally, I stumbled upon a decent one that had a pretty comprehensive list, though it took some digging. I spent a good hour just scrolling through, familiarizing myself with the names.
Start to Organize the Data
- First up: Jack Nicklaus. Man, this guy was a beast! He’s got a whopping 18 major wins under his belt. I made a note to read more about his career later.
- Then there’s Tiger Woods. Of course, everyone knows Tiger. He’s second on the list with 15 majors. What a legend.
- Next, I started looking at some of the older players. Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player… these guys were pioneers of the sport. I jotted down their names and their number of wins, too.
After compiling the list, I decided to organize it. I made a simple table in a spreadsheet, with columns for the player’s name, the number of Masters wins, PGA Championship wins, U.S. Open wins, and Open Championship wins. Then, I added a column for the total number of major wins. It was satisfying to see it all laid out neatly.
Next, I thought it would be cool to visualize the data. I created a bar chart showing the top 10 players with the most major wins. Seeing the bars stacked up really put things into perspective. Jack’s 18 wins towered over everyone else!
Then, out of curiosity, I made a pie chart showing the distribution of major wins by tournament. The Masters, U.S. Open, and Open Championship were pretty evenly split, with the PGA Championship having a slightly smaller slice. Interesting stuff!
I spent the rest of the afternoon just browsing through articles and videos about some of the most memorable major championships. There were some crazy stories, like that time a player won with a tree branch stuck to his club. Amazing!
All in all, it was a fun day of learning about golf history. I feel like I have a much better understanding of the PGA Major winners now, and I’m definitely more invested in the sport. I might even try to watch some of the tournaments this year. Who knows, maybe I’ll even pick up a club myself someday!
