Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make this black and white New York hat for a while. I finally got around to doing it, and I’m stoked with how it turned out!

First, I gathered my materials. I already had some black and white fabric scraps lying around from previous projects, so that was easy. I also needed:
- A plain baseball cap (I found a cheap one at a craft store)
- Scissors
- Fabric glue (you could sew it, but glue is way faster)
- A pencil
- Some newspaper (to protect my work surface)
Getting Started
I started by laying down the newspaper. Things were about to get messy! Then, I took the black fabric and cut out a rough circle, a bit bigger than the top of the hat. It didn’t have to be perfect, just big enough to cover the crown.
Next, I flipped the hat over and applied a generous amount of fabric glue to the top. I carefully placed the black fabric circle onto the glue, smoothing it out as best as I could. There were a few wrinkles, but I figured that added to the “handmade” charm.
Adding the White
For the white part, I wanted to do something simple, so I decided to go for stripes. I took my white fabric and cut out a bunch of long, thin strips. Again, they weren’t perfectly even, but that’s okay.
I started gluing the white strips onto the black fabric, starting from the center of the crown and working my way outwards. I overlapped them slightly to make sure there were no gaps. It was kind of like making a really messy sunburst pattern.
Finishing Touches
Once all the stripes were on, I trimmed any excess fabric that was hanging over the edge of the hat. I also added a little extra glue around the edges to make sure everything was secure.
Finally, I let the whole thing dry overnight. It took a bit of patience, but it was worth it! The glue held everything in place perfectly.
And that’s it! My new black and white New York hat was ready to wear. It’s definitely a bit rough around the edges, but I think that’s part of its appeal. It’s unique, and I made it myself! I’m pretty proud of my little project.
