Alright, so the other day, news about Bryce Harper and a new baby popped up. You know, the baseball guy. It got me thinking, not really about him specifically, but more about when my own kids were tiny, and also about a buddy of mine whose whole family lives and breathes Philly baseball. His wife just had their first kid.

Getting the Idea Rolling
So, I’m sitting there, scrolling, see the Harper news, and ping! Idea strikes. My buddy’s new kid needs some gear, right? Not official stuff, something a bit more personal, something I made. Felt like a good little project to get my hands busy. Decided I’d try and whip up a custom bib. Simple, practical, and I could put some Harper-ish, Philly-ish spin on it.
Gathering the Bits and Pieces
Didn’t need much, thankfully. I dug around in the craft box we’ve got. Found a couple of plain white baby bibs left over from goodness knows when. Perfect. Then grabbed some fabric markers I bought ages ago and barely used. Had red, blue… close enough to Phillies colors. Good to go.
- Plain white bib
- Red fabric marker
- Blue fabric marker
- Piece of cardboard (to put inside the bib)
Doing the Deed: Making the Bib
First thing, gotta prep the bib. Tossed it in the wash real quick, let it dry. You know, get any factory gunk off it. Once it was dry, I laid it flat on the kitchen table. Slipped a piece of cardboard inside so the marker wouldn’t bleed through to the other side. Smart, right? Sometimes I impress myself.
Then came the hard part: the design. I ain’t exactly an artist. Thought about his number, number 3. Simple enough. Maybe just “Harper”? Nah, too plain. Went with the number ‘3’ in a kinda blocky style with the blue marker. Sketched it lightly first. Looked okay. Then filled it in properly. Added some red stripes on the sides, like a little border. Tried to make it look kinda baseball-ish, you know?
Getting it Done:
- Washed and dried the bib.
- Put cardboard inside.
- Sketched the number ‘3’ in blue.
- Filled in the number.
- Added red stripe details on the sides.
- Let it sit flat to dry completely. Took a few hours.
The lines weren’t perfectly straight, and the blue bled a tiny bit where I pressed too hard, but hey, handmade charm, that’s what I call it. Adds character.
The Finished Product
So after letting it dry for basically half the day, I held it up. Looked pretty decent, actually. A simple little white bib with a big blue ‘3’ and some red stripes. Definitely unique. Not something you’d just buy off a shelf. Felt good making something, even something small like this. Just a little nod to baseball, Philly, and my buddy’s new little fan.
Wrapped it up, gonna give it to him next time I see him. It’s just a silly little bib, but sometimes those simple, handmade things are the best. Plus, it kept me busy for an afternoon, thinking about baseball and babies. Not a bad way to spend some time.
