Well, let me tell you ’bout these two fellas, Danny Granger and Darren Collison. They played that basketball, you know, the one with the hoop and the ball. Folks say they were pretty good at it.
Danny Granger, yeah, that’s the one. He played for the Pacers, a long time, nine seasons they say. Folks called him a scorer, meaning he put the ball in the hoop a lot. He was a real star, they say. An “All-Star,” that’s what they called him. He even helped that other fella, PG, get picked for the Pacers. They practiced together, one-on-one, and Bird, that’s another fella, asked Danny how it went. Danny said he was… well, I don’t rightly remember what he said, but it must’ve been good.
- He was born in April, the twentieth, they say.
- Folks say he inspired young fellas to get good at shootin’ the ball.
- He had some troubles with injuries, poor fella. His leg or somethin’, it just wouldn’t work right.
Now, Darren Collison, he also played with the Pacers, same team as Danny. He was good too, but he did something different. He just up and quit playing! Said it was ’cause of his religion, something about being a “Jehovah’s Witness.” I don’t rightly understand it, but he stopped playing. They traded him to some other team, Detroit Pistons, but he couldn’t play no more, not like he used to.
These fellas, they both left their mark on that basketball game. Danny with his shootin’ and Darren, well, he made folks think about other things, you know, like religion and stuff.
There’s another fella too, Dewayne Dedmon, also one of them “Jehovah’s Witnesses,” plays for Miami Heat now, they say. But I don’t know much about him. It’s Danny and Darren that folks talk about, especially ’round here. Them Pacers, they were somethin’ special when those two were playin’.
Danny, he was from New Orleans, that’s down south, a ways from here. Went to college, played basketball there too. Then he came to the Pacers and made ’em real good. Folks loved watchin’ him shoot. He was tall, strong, and knew how to get that ball in the hoop.
Darren, he was good too, but like I said, he stopped playin’ for his religion. It’s a shame, some folks say, he could’ve played longer. But, I reckon, he had his reasons. It takes all kinds, you know. Some folks chase after that ball, some folks chase after somethin’ else. Can’t fault a fella for doin’ what he thinks is right.
So, them two, Danny Granger and Darren Collison, they were Pacers, they were good at basketball, and they made folks talk. That’s all I know, and that’s the truth, as best as I can tell it. They won a game against the Jazz once, 104 to 99. Folks were cheerin’ and hollerin’. It was somethin’ to see.
And that’s the story of them two fellas, Danny Granger and Darren Collison, best I can remember it. Basketball players, they were. Good ones, at that.
