Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout them high school baseball games. Them young’uns, they play seven innings, not like the big boys on TV who play nine. Seven innings, that’s it. Seven whole innings. Seems kinda short, don’t it? But I guess them boys gotta get back to their books and such.
Now, what’s an inning, you ask? It’s like this, see. Each inning got two parts. First, the away team, they get a chance to hit the ball and run around, tryin’ to score. That’s the “top” of the inning. Then, the home team, they get their turn to hit and score. That’s the “bottom.” Top and bottom, that’s one inning. And they do that seven times in high school baseball. Seven times!
- Top of the inning: Away team hits.
- Bottom of the inning: Home team hits.
Sometimes, them scores be tied after seven innings. Yep, tied up like a knot. What then? Well, then they gotta play some more. They call ’em “extra innings.” They keep playin’ till somebody wins. Ain’t no ties in baseball, not if they can help it. They play and they play, till one team scores more runs than the other. It can go on for a while, you know. Sometimes it gets late, and the lights gotta come on. Makes it hard to see, all them lights shining in your eyes.
I heard tell that in some places, they got rules for these extra innings. Like, they might start puttin’ a runner on second base to make things go faster. That way, somebody’s more likely to score, and the game don’t drag on forever. Kids gotta sleep, ya know? And their mommas gotta get ’em home. So, they try to speed things up a bit.
Now, why seven innings? Why not nine, like the pros? Well, I reckon it’s ’cause them high school kids got schoolwork to do. They ain’t just ball players, they gotta study and learn stuff. Seven innings is enough to get a good game in, but it don’t take up the whole dang day. Gotta be responsible, them kids do. Gotta get their learnin’ in.
High school baseball innings, that’s the key here. We ain’t talkin’ ’bout no grown men playin’ for big money. We talkin’ ’bout young fellas, playin’ for the love of the game, and maybe a little bit for bragging rights around school. And seven innings, that’s enough for that, I reckon.
Sometimes, the weather can mess things up too. Rain comes pourin’ down, or it gets too dark, and they gotta stop the game before seven innings are done. That ain’t a real game then, is it? They might have to start over another day. Or maybe, if they got enough innings in, they call it official. It all depends on the rules, and them rules can be different in different places, you know. Every state, every league, they might have their own little ways of doin’ things.
But the main thing to remember, the most important thing, is that in high school baseball, they play seven innings. Unless it’s tied, then they play more. And unless the weather gets bad, then they might stop early. But most of the time, it’s seven. Seven innings of baseball, and then everybody goes home. That’s the way it is, and that’s the way it should be.
So, next time you’re watchin’ them high school boys play ball, you’ll know how many innings to expect. Seven. Unless, of course, it ain’t seven. Then, well, you just gotta wait and see what happens. That’s the fun of it, ain’t it? Never quite knowin’ what’s gonna happen next.
And that, my friends, is about all I know about high school baseball and how many of them innings they play. It ain’t rocket science, but it’s somethin’ to know if you’re gonna watch them young’uns play ball. Seven innings…most of the time, anyhow.
