Alright, so ya wanna know ’bout this Ben Shelton fella, is he black or what? Let me tell ya what I know, the way I know how.
Who’s this Ben Shelton anyway?
Well, from what I hear, this young fella, Ben Shelton, he’s a tennis player. A real good one, they say. Born in 2002, which makes him… let me see… still a young whippersnapper! He’s American, plays tennis professionally, and is apparently doin’ pretty darn good at it. They say he’s ranked pretty high up there, number 13 in the whole wide world, or somethin’ like that. That’s a big deal, I reckon. Folks are makin’ a fuss over him, that’s for sure. He’s won a good chunk of money too, millions they say. Must be nice.
Is He Black or Not? What’s the Big Deal?
Now, about him being black… See, people are always tryin’ to figure out who’s what. They hear about someone good, and they gotta put ‘em in a box, ya know? Well, lemme tell ya, this boy’s daddy, Bryan Shelton, he’s black. And a tennis player too, from what I hear. A good one at that. So yeah, I guess you could say Ben Shelton, he’s black. But what does it matter, really? He’s a good tennis player, that’s what matters. He works hard, plays hard, and that’s all there is to it.
More Than Just Tennis
They talk about this Black History Month thing. Seems like they’re showin’ off all the good black tennis players, and Ben Shelton’s one of them, I guess. Good for him, I say. Folks should be proud of where they come from and who they are. This Arthur Ashe fella, they mentioned him too. Another good tennis player, seems like. They’re makin’ a big deal outta these fellas, and that’s alright by me.

And this boy, Ben, he’s got folks givin’ him money to wear their stuff. This On Brand company, they signed him up. First tennis player they signed, they say, except for that Roger Federer fella with the shoes. So, Ben’s doin’ somethin’ right, gettin’ all that attention.
Family and All That
They say there’s info out there ‘bout his parents and his coach and even his girlfriend. Guess folks are interested in all that. He’s got a daddy who played tennis, like I said, and that probably helped him along. But it’s his own hard work that got him where he is, I reckon.
So, What’s the Bottom Line?
Look, this Ben Shelton, he’s a good tennis player. He’s young, he’s got talent, and he’s workin’ hard. He’s American, and yes, his daddy’s black, so I guess that makes him black too. But like I said, that ain’t the whole story. He’s more than just his skin color. He’s a tennis player, a son, maybe a boyfriend, and a whole lot of other things. Don’t go puttin’ him in a box, ya hear? Let him be who he is.
