Okay, so, today I’m gonna walk you through my little experiment with “brooklyn belles.” Heard about it online, seemed fun, so I figured, why not give it a shot? Here’s how it all went down.

First things first, I dug around online to see what this “brooklyn belles” thing even was. I found a bunch of different ideas, but the common thread seemed to be a kinda vintage, girly, maybe even slightly boudoir-ish vibe. Think lace, soft lighting, and a bit of playful naughtiness. I grabbed a few inspo pics to get the ball rolling.
Next, I started rummaging through my closet. Found this old, flowy white dress I hadn’t worn in ages. It’s got these little lace details around the sleeves, which I thought would be perfect. I also found a string of pearls, a feather boa (don’t ask!), and a pair of ridiculously high heels. The heels were probably a mistake, but hey, gotta commit, right?
Alright, now for the fun part: setting up the shoot. My apartment is kinda small, so I had to get creative. I dragged my bed over to the window for some natural light, hung up a sheer white curtain as a backdrop, and scattered some rose petals around (fake ones, obviously. I’m not that extra). I also lit a few candles for a softer mood. Almost burned the place down, but we don’t talk about that.
Makeup was next. I usually just slap on some mascara and call it a day, but for this, I wanted to go all out. I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials, applied a full face of makeup (foundation, concealer, the whole shebang), and even attempted a smoky eye. It looked…okay. Definitely not professional, but good enough for my purposes.
Hair was another story. I have absolutely no skill when it comes to hair styling. I tried to curl it with a curling iron, but mostly just ended up with a tangled mess. Eventually, I just gave up and threw it up in a messy bun. Added a sparkly hair clip for good measure.
Finally, it was time to actually take the pictures. I set up my phone on a tripod, put it on a timer, and started posing. This is where things got awkward. I felt so self-conscious trying to look all sultry and glamorous. I probably looked more like a confused grandma trying to find her dentures. But I kept going, snapping photo after photo, hoping that at least a few would turn out decent.
After about an hour, I had a couple hundred photos to sift through. Most of them were terrible. Blurry, weird angles, awkward expressions. But there were a few that I actually liked! I edited them in my phone, added a vintage filter, and posted them on Instagram.
The response was…interesting. Some people loved them, some people thought they were weird, and some people just ignored them. But hey, that’s social media for ya. Overall, I’d say the “brooklyn belles” experiment was a success. It was fun to step outside my comfort zone, get creative, and play dress-up. Would I do it again? Maybe. But next time, I’m hiring a professional photographer!
So there you have it. My “brooklyn belles” adventure. It was a bit silly, a bit awkward, but ultimately, a lot of fun. If you’re looking for a way to spice up your life and try something new, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Just don’t set your apartment on fire.
