Okay, so I saw this debate raging online – Pete Maravich vs. Caitlin Clark. Who’s the better college scorer? I’m a huge basketball fan, so I had to dig into this myself. It’s like comparing apples and oranges, different eras, different rules, but still…fun to think about!

My Deep Dive Process
First, I grabbed their stats. That was easy enough, plenty of websites have that info. I focused on points per game, field goal percentage, and – because it’s a big deal now – three-point shooting (though Pistol Pete didn’t have that advantage).
Next, I watched a TON of game footage. Old, grainy footage of Maravich, which, honestly, is still amazing to watch. He was doing things back then that are still highlight-reel worthy today. Then, of course, plenty of Clark’s games. She’s just… everywhere on the court.
I spent hours just comparing their styles. Maravich was all flash and creativity. Behind-the-back passes, crazy dribbling moves, shots from anywhere. Clark is more… calculated, I guess? Deadly accurate, incredible range, but also a great passer and court general.
Listed them below:
- Pete Maravich’s scoring average is insane, even without a three-point line.
- Caitlin Clark is a three point shot god, even beyond the three-point line.
- Different rules, Pete’s time the defense is more…relax, but now, it is different.
Then I started thinking about the context. Maravich played in an era without a three-point line! Imagine how many MORE points he would have had! But, the game was also different back then, arguably less physical defense. Clark, on the other hand, plays in a much more structured, team-oriented game, with way more defensive pressure. And she’s facing double and triple teams constantly!
My (Totally Subjective) Conclusion
It’s honestly impossible to say definitively who’s “better.” After my little research project, I realized it’s more about appreciating both of them for what they are: incredible talents who dominated in their respective eras. I ended up just feeling lucky to have witnessed both, even if one was through old YouTube clips!
I still think it is an endless disscussion, and the different is just too big.
