Alright, listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about some baseball teams, college ones, the best ever, they say. I don’t know nothin’ ’bout fancy stats or whatever, but I know a good team when I see one, just like I know a ripe watermelon from a bad one.
So, they tell me there’s this team, the 1983 Texas Longhorns. Folks say they were somethin’ else. Sixty-six wins and only fourteen losses, that’s what they say. And in their own little group of teams, they didn’t lose a single game, twenty-four and zero! Heard tell of a fella named Roger Clemens, went on to be a big shot in the major leagues. Guess he was pretty good, hittin’ and pitchin’ and all that. They were real strong, like my old mule, could pull a plow all day long and never tire.
Now, they got these fellas, writers they call ’em, Rob Neyer and Eddie Epstein, smart fellas I reckon. They looked at a whole bunch of teams, fifteen they said, the real strong ones, you know? They checked all the numbers, how many runs they scored, how many they didn’t let in, all that jazz. And they looked at the players too, see who was good and who was just takin’ up space. It’s like when you’re pickin’ corn, you gotta separate the good ears from the bad ones.
- They say some of these teams, they was just plain dominant. Like a rooster in a hen house, nobody could touch ’em.
- And it ain’t just about winnin’ games, it’s about how you win ’em, see? Did you blow everybody out? Did you come back when you were down? That’s what makes a team special, not just winnin’, but winnin’ with grit. Like my grandpappy used to say, “It ain’t the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
They tell me baseball’s got a long history, college ball too. Lots of great teams, lots of great players. Some of them old-timers, way back when, they were good too. Like them Detroit Tigers, I heard they won three championships in a row a long, long time ago. That’s like gettin’ three perfect watermelons in a row from your patch, not an easy thing to do, I tell ya.
So, this list they made, it ain’t every good team ever, they say. Can’t put everyone on there, I guess. But it’s got some of the best, the ones that really stood out. The ones that made people say, “Dang, them boys are good!” You know, like when you see a field of cotton so white and full, you just gotta stop and stare.
Now, I can’t tell you all the fancy details, all the numbers and such. That ain’t my way. But I can tell you that these teams, they were somethin’ special. They played hard, they played smart, and they won a whole lotta games. And that’s what counts, ain’t it? Winnin’. Just like when you’re plantin’ a garden, you want it to grow big and strong and give you lots of good food to eat. These teams, they gave their fans lots of good baseball to watch. And that’s why they’re the best, or so they say.
College baseball, it’s a big deal to some folks. They love it, they follow it, they get all worked up about it. Me, I like a good game now and then, but I ain’t gonna lose no sleep over it. But I can appreciate a good team when I see one. And these teams, the ones they talk about, the best ever? Well, I reckon they musta been pretty darn good.
So there you have it, my take on the best college baseball teams. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, just an old woman who knows a thing or two about hard work and winnin’. And these teams, they worked hard and they won. And that’s good enough for me.
