Well, now, let me tell ya ’bout Fred Hoiberg and his youngins. I reckon most folks know Fred from his basketball days—used to be a big ol’ fella in the NBA, then moved on to coaching at Nebraska. But, did ya know that Fred’s got some kids of his own? Yep, sure does. Now, ya might think that being a big-time coach and all means Fred’s kids don’t get a whole lotta attention, but that’s just not the case, ’cause one of ’em’s out there on the court with him, playin’ basketball for the Cornhuskers!
Now, this here story’s a bit of a unique one. Ya see, Fred Hoiberg, the coach, well, he’s got a son named Sam. That’s right, Sam Hoiberg. Now, this young feller, he’s not sittin’ in the stands or sittin’ in the bleachers watchin’ his daddy coach, no sir. He’s out there on the court, wearin’ that Cornhusker jersey and givin’ it his all. He’s been playin’ for Nebraska, and I hear he’s been doin’ pretty well, too, given that he’s only just gettin’ started.
Sam’s not the only one in the family though, oh no! Fred’s got a couple more kids. There’s Jack and Charlie, and a girl named Paige. I’m sure they all get together now and then, what with the Hoiberg family bein’ so close-knit and all. It ain’t easy bein’ a coach and a dad, but Fred, he makes it work, and I reckon that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
Now, Fred’s a bit of a fighter himself. See, he’s had some health troubles along the way. He was born with a bad heart valve, and that caused him all kinds of troubles. Had surgeries in 2005 and again in 2015. But that didn’t stop him. No sir, he kept goin’. Even when the doctor told him to quit playin’ ball, he didn’t listen. Instead, he went on to coach, and look at where he’s at now—leadership of the Nebraska Cornhuskers!
But let’s get back to Sam. That young feller’s been playin’ for his daddy’s team. He’s had a pretty solid run, too. Played 32 games for Nebraska, and I hear he’s average about 3.4 points and 2.9 rebounds. Now, I know that ain’t the highest number in the world, but it ain’t bad for a fella just startin’ out. It ain’t easy, playin’ under the shadow of your famous father, but Sam’s holdin’ his own.
And you know, it must be somethin’ special for Fred, coachin’ his own son. I mean, how many dads can say they got to coach their youngin’ at such a high level? Not many, I reckon. That’s a bond like no other, and I’m sure it makes Fred mighty proud. Heck, I’d be proud if I was him!
Well, I reckon that’s ’bout all I gotta say on the matter. But if you’re ever in Nebraska and happen to be at a Cornhuskers game, keep an eye out for Sam Hoiberg on that court. Who knows, you might just see him make a big ol’ play and help his daddy’s team win a game! It sure would be a sight to see!
