Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make some custom shoes for a while, and I’m a huge Phoenix Suns fan. So I thought, “Why not combine the two?” I wanted to capture those awesome Suns colors on a pair of kicks. Here’s how I did it.
Getting Started
First, I needed some shoes. I went with plain white canvas shoes – they’re like a blank slate, perfect for customizing. You can grab these at tons of stores, nothing fancy.
Gathering Supplies
Next up, the colors! I needed fabric paint, obviously. I made sure to get these colors:
- Purple: A good, vibrant Suns purple.
- Orange: That classic, bright orange.
- Black: For outlines and details.
- White: that classic, White.
I also grabbed some:
- Paintbrushes (different sizes for details and larger areas)
- Masking tape (to keep the lines clean)
- A pencil (for sketching the design)
- A sealant spray (to protect the paint)
Prepping the Shoes
Before any painting, I cleaned the shoes with a damp cloth to get rid of any dust or anything. Then, I used masking tape to cover the soles and any parts I didn’t want to paint. This is key for getting those sharp lines.
Painting Process
I lightly sketched out my design on the shoes with a pencil. I wasn’t going for anything super complicated, mostly color blocks and maybe a simple Suns-inspired design on the sides.
Then, the fun part! I started painting. I did a couple of thin coats of each color, letting each coat dry completely before the next. Patience is a virtue here, folks. Don’t rush it, or you’ll end up with smudges.
I used the purple and orange for the main areas, and then used the black for some outlines and accents. It took some time, but seeing those Suns colors come to life on the shoes was pretty cool.
Finishing Touches
Once everything was totally dry (I waited a full day, just to be safe), I carefully peeled off the masking tape. I made sure all the color is dry!
Finally, I sprayed the shoes with a sealant spray. This helps protect the paint from scuffs and makes the shoes last longer. A couple of coats of sealant, letting it dry in between, did the trick.
And that’s it! Now I’ve got my own custom Phoenix Suns-colored shoes. They’re not perfect, but I made them myself, and they show off my team spirit. If you’re a Suns fan and you’re feeling crafty, give it a shot!
