Alright, let’s talk about this red spider putter I picked up. My putting, well, it was getting pretty frustrating. You know how it is. Felt like I was leaving shots all over the green. My old blade putter just wasn’t feeling right anymore. Kept seeing these spider-type putters everywhere, guys on TV using them. Then I saw this bright red one. Caught my eye, you know?

So, I decided, what the heck, let’s give it a shot. Went down to the local golf shop. They had a few different spider models. This red one, though, it just stood out. Picked it up. Felt different right away. Heavier than my old putter, more balanced, kinda solid. Looked a bit strange, not gonna lie, like some sort of gadget. But felt good in my hands. Handed over the cash and took it home.
First Swings and Practice
Took it straight to the practice green the next day. Lining up the first few putts felt… weird. It sits so flat and square behind the ball. Totally different picture than the thin blade I was used to. That red color, though, it really makes the alignment lines pop against the green grass. I started rolling a few. Some went in, some missed way off. Took a while to get the feel for the speed and the weight.
The main thing I noticed? Stability. My old putter sometimes felt like it could twist a bit in my hands on iffy strokes. This thing feels more solid through the stroke. Like it wants to stay square. Spent a good hour just rolling 10-footers, trying to get comfortable.
Taking it to the Course
Okay, game time. First round with the red spider. Bit nervous, honestly. Didn’t want to blame the putter if things went bad, haha. First few holes, putting was just okay. Still getting the distance control dialled in. Missed a short one, the kind that makes you sigh. But then, on the 7th hole, had about a 15-footer, slight break. Lined it up, focused on that smooth stroke we practiced. Rolled right in the heart. Felt amazing.
Over the next few rounds, I started noticing a pattern. My short putts, inside 6 feet, felt more confident. The putter just seemed easier to keep on line for those nerve-wracking little testers. Lag putting took more adjustment because the feel off the face is different, kinda softer than my old steel blade. But I wasn’t leaving myself those terrible second putts as often.
So, What’s the Verdict?
Been playing with the red spider for a few months now. It’s definitely staying in the bag. Look, it’s not a magic wand. My putting hasn’t suddenly become tour pro level. I still have bad days. You still gotta read the greens right and put a good stroke on it. Practice is still key, always will be.
But, for me, it works better than my old putter. It feels more stable, especially on shorter putts. The alignment is easier with that shape and the red color contrast. It just suits my eye and my stroke better right now. It gives me a bit more confidence standing over the ball. And sometimes, that little bit of confidence is all you need on the greens. So yeah, the red spider putter experiment? I’d say it was a success. Happy I made the switch.
