Okay, so folks have been asking me about that UConn basketball facility, the Werth Family Champions Center. I finally got a chance to check it out not too long ago, and figured I’d share what it was like.

Getting There and First Impressions
It wasn’t exactly a planned trip, more like I was in the area, you know? Had some time to kill near Storrs and thought, why not try and see where all the magic happens. Finding the place was easy enough, right there on campus. Pulling up, it looks impressive from the outside. Not overly flashy, but solid, you know? Like it means business. It definitely gives off that championship vibe even before you step inside.
Getting in wasn’t like just walking into a public library, obviously. I wasn’t part of an official tour or anything, just kinda showed up hoping to catch a glimpse. Luckily, I bumped into someone working there, real nice guy, who let me peek around a bit in the main lobby area after I explained I was just a huge Huskies fan.
Inside the Werth Center
So, the lobby itself is pretty cool. Trophies everywhere! Seriously, it’s like walking into a treasure room. National Championship trophies for both the men’s and women’s teams are right there, gleaming under the lights. It’s one thing to see them on TV, totally different standing right next to them. Makes you realize the history and success packed into this program.
- Saw lots of photos and memorabilia on the walls. Big moments captured.
- You could see the sheer scale of the place, even just from the entrance areas.
- There was this palpable energy, even though it was quiet when I was there.
I didn’t get to see the locker rooms or the players’ lounge – that’s usually off-limits unless you’re, well, part of the team or on a very specific tour. But I did get a good look at the practice courts through some glass panels. Man, those courts looked pristine. Two full-sized courts side-by-side. You can just imagine the intensity of practices happening there. It looked like a top-tier setup, everything clean and state-of-the-art. They also had a massive strength and conditioning area visible, looked like a serious gym.
The Vibe
What really struck me was just the feel of the place. It felt professional. It felt like a place built for champions, focused entirely on basketball excellence. Every detail seemed geared towards supporting the players and the program. It wasn’t just a gym; it was like the heart of UConn basketball. You could almost hear the squeak of sneakers and the bounce of the ball even when it was empty.
Didn’t get to stay too long, maybe 20 minutes soaking it all in from the permitted areas. But it was enough. Seeing where players like Kemba, Breanna Stewart, Ray Allen, and so many others honed their skills… that was something special. It’s more than just bricks and mortar; it’s got that history baked into it.
So yeah, that was my quick, unofficial peek at the UConn basketball facility. If you’re ever near Storrs and are a big fan, it’s worth seeing if you can at least check out the lobby. It really connects you to the program in a cool way. Definitely left me impressed.
