My Little Project: Figuring Out Golf’s Grand Slam Winners
So, I was watching some golf highlights the other day, and folks kept mentioning the ‘Grand Slam’. Sounded important. I nodded along like I knew what was up, but honestly? I wasn’t totally sure who actually pulled it off. Winning all four big tournaments, right? Seemed like a massive deal.

I tried thinking. Okay, Tiger Woods, gotta be him. Jack Nicklaus too, probably. Then… my mind went kinda blank. Was it Palmer? Snead? I started mixing guys up. Realized I didn’t actually know for sure who belonged to this fancy club.
Decided I needed to sort this out. Wasn’t some big research project, just me wanting to know. So, I sat down and started searching around. Typed something like ‘golfers who won all four majors’ into the search bar. Easy enough.
Well, the results came back. And yeah, it’s a short list. Like, really short for the men’s game, anyway. Turns out, completing the ‘Career Grand Slam’ – winning all four majors at some point in your career – is super rare. I jotted down the names so I wouldn’t forget:
- Gene Sarazen
- Ben Hogan
- Gary Player
- Jack Nicklaus
- Tiger Woods
Just five guys. That kinda surprised me. You hear about so many legendary golfers, but only these five have won the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship (British Open), and the PGA Championship.
Then I got a bit more curious. Started clicking around a bit more. Found out Gene Sarazen was the first to do it, finished his set way back in 1935. And Ben Hogan’s story, wow. Winning three majors after that terrible car crash? Incredible stuff. Gary Player, the South African guy, he apparently travelled like crazy to play everywhere and completed his Slam. Then Jack, who has the most majors overall, and Tiger, the youngest to do it.
It wasn’t like I spent days on this, just maybe an hour poking around. But it cleared things up for me. Made me appreciate watching the majors a bit more, knowing how tough it is just to win one, let alone all four different ones.
So yeah, that was my little dive into the Grand Slam golfers. Felt good to finally get it straight in my head. It’s a pretty amazing achievement, definitely puts those five names into perspective.
