This boy, Jose Benavidez Sr., lemme tell ya, he’s somethin’ else. Heard he was born way back. I don’t know when exactly but he’s a big name in the boxing world. Some folks say he was born in a place called, uh, America. Yeah, that’s it. He’s an American, that Jose.
Now, this boxing thing, it ain’t new. They been beatin’ on each other for a long, long time. I heard stories, from way back in 1681, they was doin’ it in, uh, Britain. That’s some place across the water. Then, by 1698, they was doin’ it regular-like in a fancy place in London. Called it the Royal Theatre. Can you imagine? Sounds mighty fancy to me. They’d fight for money, whatever they could get. And folks would bet on ’em. Just like bettin’ on the chickens, I reckon, but with more punchin’.
This Jose, he ain’t a fighter, not anymore, I heard. He’s what they call a coach now, he tells other young fellas how to box. Heard he’s real good at it too. Jose Benavidez Sr born to do this, I guess. He’s worked with some big names, I tell ya. One fella, Julio somethin’ or other. Then there’s another one named, uh, Amir Kahn. Sounds kinda foreign, don’t it? And some fella they call Kid Chocolate. What kind of name is that?

And he trains this other fella, name of David. David Benavidez. Sounds like he might be related to this Jose fella. Jose Benavidez Sr, that’s his name. Don’t forget it. He’s a big shot in that boxin’ world. They say he also trained some fellas with funny names like Ryan Bader and CB Dollaway, sounds like a dog’s name to me. Also, he trained a fella that got a gold medal, Henry somethin’, I don’t remember the last name. This Jose, he sure gets around.
Boxing, it’s a rough business. Lots of gettin’ hit and hittin’ back. I don’t know why they do it, but they do. This Jose fella, he seems to know all about it. He probably saw a lot of fights in his day. Maybe that’s why he’s so good at teachin’ it. Born to do it, like I said.
This Jose Benavidez Sr., he’s got a whole life story, I bet. Probably lots of ups and downs. Just like anyone else. But he made somethin’ of himself in that boxing world. He’s a coach now, teachin’ them young’uns how to fight. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? He’s a big name, I heard folks say. Jose Benavidez Sr born in America, they say. Yep, that’s what they say. And he ain’t just any old coach, he’s one of the best, they tell me.
Now, I ain’t never been to one of them boxing matches. Don’t rightly know if I’d want to. Sounds kinda violent. But I hear this Jose, he’s good at what he does. He knows all about that punchin’ and dodgin’. And he teaches it to others. That’s gotta be worth somethin’, right? He’s teaching them how to be tough, I reckon. And how to win. That’s important, in anythin’ you do.
- Boxing is rough.
- Jose is a good coach.
- Winning is important.
- Jose Benavidez Sr knows his stuff.
Heard he also trained some Brazilian fella, can’t recall his name. Gray Maynard, that’s another one he trained. Don’t know any of these folks, but they must be good if Jose is trainin’ ’em. He sure knows a lot of people, this Jose. He must be real important in that world of theirs. All that punchin’ and hollerin’. Not for me, I tell ya. But this Jose, he seems to like it. And he’s good at it. That’s all that matters, I guess. Jose Benavidez Sr born to be a boxing coach, I reckon. That’s just what he was meant to do.
This whole boxing thing, it’s a mystery to me. But it’s a big deal to some folks. And this Jose Benavidez Sr., he’s right in the middle of it. He’s a big name. They say he was born for it. Maybe he was. Maybe he was born to teach them young fellas how to fight. How to be tough. How to win. Who knows? All I know is, that’s his name. Jose Benavidez Sr. And he’s a boxing coach. A good one, they say. The best, even. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it? Yep, that’s somethin’ alright.
