Well, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Maalik Murphy. Folks are talkin’ ’bout his 40 time, sayin’ it’s 4.68 seconds. Now, I ain’t no track star, but that sounds kinda slow to me. He’s a big ol’ boy, plays quarterback, you know, throwin’ the ball and all that.
They say he was a big shot in high school, a four-star recruit outta California. Junipero Serra High School, they call it. Sounds fancy, huh? But then he went to Texas, sat on the bench mostly. Redshirted, they say. Means he didn’t play much his first year. Too many other fellas ahead of him, I guess. Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card, those were the names.
Now, he’s gone and moved to Duke. Duke Blue Devils, they call ’em. I don’t know much about them college teams, but they say he’s gonna be their quarterback. He throws that ball pretty far, they say. Got a “good touch on the deep ball,” whatever that means. And he’s gotta throw it on time, in rhythm, they say. Like dancin’, I guess.
- He’s a big boy.
- He throws the ball far.
- He didn’t play much at Texas.
- Now he’s at Duke.
He seems like a good kid, though. They say he’s a leader, the kinda fella other boys like. Works hard, they say. Not just on the field, but off it too. Smart, maybe? They gave him some kinda award for bein’ smart, somethin’ ’bout “Academic All-Big 12.” Guess he ain’t just a jock, huh?
They got all these websites, see? ESPN, 247, On3… They tell ya all sorts of things ’bout these players. Stats, they call ’em. How many games he played, how many times he threw the ball, all that stuff. He ain’t played much, though. Seven games, only started two. Still learnin’, I reckon.
He transferred, you know. Left Texas, went to Duke. Maybe he’ll get to play more now. They sure are talkin’ ’bout him a lot. He’s got potential, they say. That means he could be good, real good, if he keeps workin’ hard. But that 40 time, well, it ain’t gonna win him no races, that’s for sure.
He’s got this profile on ESPN, they got all his information there. They even got stuff in other languages, like that Veja thing, whatever that is. Seems like folks all over the world wanna know ’bout this Maalik Murphy. He must be somethin’ special, or gonna be somethin’ special, I guess.
Now, I’m just an old woman, I don’t know much ’bout football. But I can tell ya this, hard work and a good head on your shoulders, that’ll take ya far. Whether it’s throwin’ a football or plantin’ corn, it’s all the same. And this Maalik Murphy, seems like he’s got both. So maybe that 4.68 ain’t the whole story, ya know? Maybe he’s got somethin’ else, somethin’ they can’t measure with a stopwatch. We’ll just have to wait and see.
He played for the Texas Longhorns before, that’s what they tell me. Seems like a good program, lots of history there. But he’s a Blue Devil now, so he’s gotta forget all about that Texas stuff and focus on Duke. That’s what a good player does, puts his team first. And I reckon he will.
He ain’t got all that much experience, only two starts under his belt. But everyone starts somewhere, right? Even the best quarterbacks in the league had to get their start somewhere. Maybe Duke is gonna be where Maalik Murphy makes his name. Time will tell, that’s what I always say. Time will tell.
So, let’s not get too hung up on that 40 time. It’s just one little number. There’s a whole lot more to a football player than how fast he can run. It’s about heart, it’s about brains, it’s about leadership. And from what I hear, Maalik Murphy’s got all those things in spades.
