Okay, so I’ve been getting into MMA lately, right? Watching the fights, training a bit, and I realized I didn’t even know what size gloves these guys were using. So I went down a rabbit hole to figure out how many ounces MMA gloves actually are. Figured I’d share what I found, ’cause it’s kinda interesting.
First off, I started by hitting up the internet, just to get a basic idea. Found out that the pros, like the UFC fighters, they use 4-ounce gloves. Some sources said that gloves can reach up to 6 ounces. I guess it gives them more choices when they need bigger-sized gloves. Yeah, those are some tiny gloves! Makes sense, though, since they need to be able to punch fast and grapple and all that.
- Professional fights: 4 oz (110 g)
- Amateur fights: 6 oz (170 g)
Then I learned that amateurs, they use slightly bigger gloves, usually around 6 ounces. A bit more padding, probably to keep everyone a bit safer while they’re learning. Also, the sparring gloves used for training? Those are even heavier, starting at 7 ounces and going up.
So I found a pair of used 4-ounce gloves online. I measured the circumference of my hand and got the right size for me. They felt so light compared to boxing gloves! I tried them on, threw some punches at the air (haha), and I could see how they’d work in a fight. You can really feel your knuckles, which is a bit scary but also kinda cool.
Then I tried on some 6-ounce ones at a local sports store. Definitely more padding, felt a bit safer for sure. But you know what? I think I prefer the 4-ounce ones. They just feel more…real, I guess? More like what you see in the actual fights.
Anyway, that’s my little journey into the world of MMA glove sizes. It’s not rocket science, but it’s cool to know what these fighters are actually using. Makes watching the fights a bit more interesting, at least for me! And hey, maybe I’ll even use these gloves for real someday. Who knows?
