Alright, let’s talk about this Paige Duncan, eh? Sounds like a fancy name, somethin’ you’d hear on the TV. Don’t know her from a hole in the ground, but I heard some things, y’know, from the neighbors and such. Gossip spreads faster than butter on a hot biscuit ’round here.
First off, they say she’s a big shot in some town, Foxboro, I think they called it. Town manager, that’s what they said. Sounds important, like she tells everyone what to do. Probably makes a lot of money, too. Wish I had a job like that, wouldn’t have to break my back in the fields all day long.
Now, they also mentioned somethin’ about land use. Said she’s a specialist in it. Land use, what’s that even mean? I reckon it’s got somethin’ to do with tellin’ folks where they can build their houses and barns. Back in my day, you just built wherever you darn well pleased, long as it wasn’t on your neighbor’s property. Times sure have changed, haven’t they?
- Heard she got the job outta nowhere, real quick-like.
- Seems like folks in that town mostly like her, least that’s what I heard.
- But you know how it is, there’s always gonna be some folks complainin’. Can’t please everyone, that’s for sure.
Then there was somethin’ about a vote. The town board, they all voted for her. Unanimous, they said. That means everyone agreed, right? Must be doin’ somethin’ right if she got all them folks on her side. Or maybe they just didn’t wanna argue, some folks are like that, you know?
Folks were also gabbin’ about this Paige Duncan bein’ on somethin’ called Facebook. Now, I ain’t got no use for that fancy computer stuff. But the young’uns, they’re always glued to their phones. Facebook, they say, is where you go to see what other people are doin’. Sounds like a waste of time to me. I got better things to do than snoopin’ around other folks’ business. But I guess this Paige Duncan is on there, so maybe she likes to keep up with folks.
And get this, they even said somethin’ about this gal goin’ to some fancy university. Northwestern, somethin’ like that. University! Can you believe it? Most folks ’round here barely finished high school, if that. My grandpappy always said, “Hard work is the best education.” Guess times are different now. Everybody wants to go to college, even gals.
Some folks were whisperin’ that she’s from Tuscaloosa. Never been there myself. Heard it’s a big city, lots of hustle and bustle. Not like here, where things are slow and peaceful. I guess folks from big cities are different. They got different ways of thinkin’ and doin’ things.
Oh, and there was somethin’ else, somethin’ about basketball, or maybe it was football. I can’t keep up with all them sports. Said there was this other girl, Paige somethin’-or-other, and folks were always comparin’ them. Seems like people always gotta compare folks, don’t they? Can’t just let folks be themselves. It’s always “who’s better”, “who’s smarter”, “who’s got more”. Lord have mercy, it makes my head spin just thinkin’ about it.
Anyway, that’s all I heard about this Paige Duncan. Seems like she’s a busy woman, doin’ all sorts of important things. Good for her, I say. Hope she’s happy, wherever she is and whatever she’s doin’. Me, I’m just gonna stick to my garden and my chickens. That’s enough excitement for this old gal.
It’s funny, isn’t it? How you can hear so much about someone without even meetin’ them. Makes you wonder what folks are sayin’ about you behind your back. Probably that I talk too much, which is probably true, ha! But that’s just the way I am, I like to chat. Anyways, gotta go make some supper now. Got a hankerin’ for some fried chicken.
