Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with my golf gear lately, trying to get everything dialed in just right. Today, I wanted to see if I could replicate Patrick Cantlay’s setup for 2024. That guy is seriously good, and I figured maybe, just maybe, some of his magic would rub off on me if I used the same clubs.
First, I gotta say, getting all the exact clubs is a pain. Like, this stuff is expensive! But I did my best to find either the real deal or something pretty darn close. I started with the driver. Cantlay uses a Titleist TS3, and man, that thing is a beast. I found a used one online, thank goodness, ’cause a new one would have cost me an arm and a leg.
- Driver: Titleist TS3 (used, but in good shape, phew!)
Next up, the fairway woods. He’s got a Titleist 915F 3-wood and a Titleist TS2 5-wood. I managed to snag a 915F, but the TS2 was tougher to find in the right specs. I ended up going with a slightly newer model that felt similar during testing. Not perfect, but hey, close enough, right?
- 3-wood: Titleist 915F (got lucky with this one too)
- 5-wood: A slightly newer Titleist model, similar to the TS2
For the irons, Cantlay is all about the Titleist 718 AP2s. These are some seriously slick irons. I couldn’t find the exact set he uses, so I got a set that was close. It was a bit of a gamble, but they felt amazing when I tried them out at the range.
- Irons: Titleist 718 AP2s (a similar set, fingers crossed!)
Then there’s the wedges. He rocks Titleist Vokey SM7s for his pitching, gap, and sand wedges, and a Vokey SM9 for his lob wedge. I found some used SM7s in decent condition and grabbed an SM9 as well. These were actually easier to find than I expected.
- Pitching, Gap, Sand Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM7s
- Lob Wedge: Titleist Vokey SM9
And finally, the putter. Cantlay uses a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 tour prototype. Let me tell you, finding a tour prototype putter is like finding a needle in a haystack. I settled for a regular Phantom X 5. It’s not the same, but it still has that Scotty Cameron feel, which is pretty sweet.
- Putter: Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 (not the prototype, but still nice)
So, after all that searching and spending, I finally had a bag that was pretty close to Patrick Cantlay’s. I took it out to the course a few times, and you know what? It felt… different. Not necessarily better, but definitely different. Maybe it’s just the placebo effect, but I felt a little more confident over the ball. I did hit some really good shots, and my putting felt smoother than usual.
But, honestly, it made me realize that it’s not just about the clubs. Cantlay is amazing because of his skill, not just his gear. Still, it was a fun experiment. I learned a lot about what kind of clubs I like and what works for my game. I’ll probably keep tweaking things, maybe I will try this software tool predicts the alertness, but for now, I’m happy with my new setup. It’s not exactly like Cantlay’s, but it’s mine, and that’s what matters, I guess. And who knows, maybe I’ll even channel a little bit of his magic out there on the course. One can only hope, right?
