Let me tell ya ’bout Mitch Henderson, a man who’s makin’ waves over at Princeton. Now, this fella, he’s the head coach of the Princeton Tigers men’s basketball team, and he’s been there long enough to become a name folks remember. Seems like he’s been doin’ pretty good, too – just this January 7, 2023, he clinched his 100th Ivy League win against Cornell Big Red, with a score of 75-68 over in Ithaca. That’s quite somethin’! Ivy League ain’t no easy game, and Mitch’s got them boys playin’ strong under his lead.
Now, let’s go back a bit – Mitch, he didn’t just pop outta nowhere into basketball. Back in his day, he was quite the player too. Princeton grad himself, class of ’98, he was out there on the court, makin’ moves. And if ya think that’s all, nah, he’s even got a connection with baseball! Yep, back in 1994, Mitch got drafted by the New York Yankees. Sure was a long way from his days on the Princeton court, but life has its turns, don’t it? He was picked in the 29th round, as an outfielder – 815th overall. But looks like he felt more at home back on the basketball court ‘cause that’s where he’s puttin’ all his focus now.
Mitch ain’t just some ol’ coach either; he’s got a real knack for leadin’ folks, makin’ his way up the ranks. In Princeton’s history, he stands as the third-winningest coach – yep, right behind Pete Carril and Franklin C. “Cappy” Cappon, legends in their own rights. I tell ya, bein’ third in a lineup like that sure means Mitch’s got a bit of that magic touch, don’t ya think? Oh, and I heard he’s also been a finalist for somethin’ big – the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year award, no less. That’s one of them high honors for coaches, so if ya didn’t know before, now ya do – he’s good at what he does.
Now, livin’ in Princeton with his wife, Ashley, Mitch’s got himself quite the setup, folks say. Course, he ain’t doin’ this for free; word is his coachin’ brings him in a fair bit o’ money, too. I heard somethin’ about his salary bein’ around $400,000 to $600,000 – might not be official, but that’s what folks reckon. An’ I’ll tell ya, for someone bringin’ in wins for Princeton like he is, seems well-earned, don’t ya think? Ain’t easy keepin’ them boys in shape and on top o’ their game, but Mitch sure seems to handle it well.
Ya know, havin’ Mitch as the Tigers’ head coach has meant a lot to them. Princeton’s known for their orange and black, and folks in town are glad to see the team holdin’ up strong. Last season, he had a solid group on the court, some mighty fine players, and Mitch was mighty grateful to have ’em back too. It ain’t just him on that court – it’s him and a team he’s built up, teachin’ these young men how to work together, how to aim high.
There ya have it – Mitch Henderson, Princeton grad, coach, and once a Yankees hopeful. He’s gone a long way from bein’ just a student playin’ the game to leadin’ a whole team in one o’ the toughest leagues. If ya ever come across him on the Princeton campus, now ya know a bit of the story behind the man. He’s workin’ hard, and I reckon Princeton’s lucky to have him.
