Man, I gotta tell you guys about this whiskey journey I went on recently. It all started when I heard about this Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey. I’d seen the name pop up here and there, mostly because of that McGregor fella, you know, the fighter? Anyway, I figured it was time to see what the fuss was all about.
First thing I did was try to find a bottle. I hit up a few local liquor stores, and eventually found one tucked away on a shelf. I saw the price tag at around $27 for a 750ml bottle – not too bad, I thought. They even had a discount going on. I saw on the sign it was $18.99 for some promotion. I thought about it then grabbed a bottle, and took it home with me.
Got home, grabbed a glass, and poured myself a neat serving. Took a good whiff of it first – got those vanilla and honey notes people talk about. I took a sip, and honestly, it was pretty smooth. I’m no whiskey expert, but it went down easy. Nothing special or outstanding, but definitely smooth. I got the caramel and vanilla flavors, and it had a nice, warm finish.
I spent the next few days trying it out in different ways. I used it in a cocktail. I also had it on the rocks, and in a highball, then I mixed it into an Irish coffee. It did its job and blended right in with those other flavors. Nothing fancy, just a good solid base for a drink.
So, what’s the verdict on Proper No. Twelve? Well, it’s a decent Irish whiskey. It’s not going to blow your mind or anything, but it’s smooth, affordable, and works well in cocktails. It’s triple-distilled and aged in bourbon barrels, which explains the vanilla and honey vibe. It didn’t live up to any hype, but I wasn’t expecting it to. I guess with McGregor out of the picture, it is just a regular, everyday Irish whiskey.
I’ve heard that the company that owns the brand, Proximo Spirits, took over fully in 2021. I also read that they aren’t going to use McGregor’s name anymore to sell it, which makes sense. It seems like they’re trying to focus on the whiskey itself, not just the celebrity name attached to it.
If you’re looking for an everyday Irish whiskey that won’t break the bank, Proper No. Twelve is worth a shot. But if you’re a real whiskey connoisseur, you might find it a bit unremarkable.
- Appearance: Golden color, like you’d expect.
- Nose: Vanilla, honey, a little bit of caramel.
- Taste: Smooth, easy to drink, more vanilla and honey, some oak.
- Finish: Warm, not too long, a little bit of spice.
- Overall: A good everyday whiskey.
I gotta say it’s pretty smooth. I’m not disappointed that I bought it, but I wouldn’t rush out to buy another bottle right away. I might pick it up again sometime if I just need a simple, no-frills whiskey for mixing drinks or sipping on a weeknight. I just had it neat, but I bet it’s even better in an Irish coffee or a whiskey sour. Cheers!
