Okay, so I was messing around with crossword puzzles today, and I kept getting stuck on clues that were basically asking for synonyms of “reckoning.” It got me thinking, “How many ways can you say ‘reckoning’?” So, I decided to do a little digging and make a list. This is what I did:

My “Reckoning” Synonym Hunt
First, I just brainstormed. I jotted down every word I could think of that seemed even remotely related. My initial list looked something like this:
- Calculation
- Judgment
- Settlement
- Count
- Estimate
Not bad, but definitely not exhaustive. So, I opened up a new tab and hit up an online thesaurus. I just typed in “reckoning” and waited for the magic to happen.
The thesaurus gave me a ton more options. I went through the list and picked out the ones that seemed most relevant to the crossword context. You know, words that actually fit in those little boxes.
Then I am trying to put the words that have relations with the crossword clue into a new list,It looks great:
- Computation
- Evaluation
- Consequences
- Doom
I also looked up some of the words in the dictionary, just to make sure I really understood their meanings and nuances. Some were a bit archaic or had specific legal or financial connotations, so I weeded those out.
Finally, I tested some of my new-found words in actual crossword puzzles. I grabbed a few puzzles I’d been working on and tried plugging in the synonyms to see if they worked. This helped me narrow down the list even further to the most common and useful ones.
It was a fun little exercise! I feel like I’ve definitely expanded my crossword vocabulary, and I’m ready to tackle any “reckoning” clue that comes my way. Now, I’m gonna be the reckoning master!
