Okay, so I finally got around to watching that Ruud versus Watanuki match. Been meaning to check it out.

Getting Started
First thing, I settled in, got the screen ready. Always takes a minute to get comfortable, right? Grabbed some water. I was curious about this one, heard Watanuki can be tricky sometimes, and Ruud, well, you expect him to be solid, especially on clay, though this wasn’t clay I think? Doesn’t matter, point is, I was ready to see what happened.
Watching the Action
The match kicked off. Early on, it felt like both guys were just feeling each other out. You know, testing the waters. Ruud was hitting his usual heavy balls, trying to push Watanuki back. Watanuki was trying to be aggressive, come forward when he could. Saw some decent rallies pretty early, nothing too crazy, but you could see their game plans.
Then things started to pick up. I remember one game, maybe mid-first set, where Watanuki really went for it. Hit a couple of winners, looked like he might get a break point. But Ruud, he just hunkered down. Served well, got himself out of trouble. That felt like a moment where Ruud just showed his experience, you know?
Key Moments I Noticed
- There was a long rally, must have been over 20 shots. Both guys were scrambling. Crowd got into it. Think Ruud won the point eventually. Showed good defense from both.
- Watanuki had a few chances on Ruud’s serve here and there, but couldn’t quite convert them when it mattered most. That’s often the difference, right? Taking those small chances.
- Ruud got a break, I think it was crucial in the first set. Felt like after that, he relaxed a bit more, played more freely.
How They Looked
Ruud: He just looked solid. Didn’t do anything too flashy, but his consistency was there. His forehand was doing damage like it usually does. He served pretty well when he needed to, especially on those break points he faced. Just seemed very focused, very professional. Didn’t give away many cheap points.
Watanuki: He had his moments, definitely. Showed some nice shot-making, especially when he took the ball early. But maybe a few too many errors compared to Ruud? Trying to be aggressive sometimes led to mistakes. You could see the talent, but Ruud’s steadiness was tough to break down consistently over the whole match.
Wrapping Up
As the match went on, Ruud seemed to get more and more comfortable. He started controlling more of the points. Watanuki kept fighting, which was good to see, never gave up. But Ruud broke again in the second set, and from there, it felt like he had a firm grip on things.
He served it out eventually. No massive drama at the end, just a solid win for Ruud. It pretty much went how I thought it might, with Ruud’s consistency being the main factor. Still, Watanuki showed he can play, just needs to tighten things up against the top guys.

So yeah, that was my watch experience. Decent match, good performance from Ruud. Always interesting to see these different styles clash.
