Okay, so I got this idea in my head a while back. I wanted to piece together Kurt Angle’s wrestling gear. You know, the classic look. It seemed simple enough at first glance, but man, getting the details right was something else.

Getting Started – The Plan
First thing I did was just look up a bunch of pictures. Needed to nail down which specific era I was going for. Decided on the classic patriotic look, the red, white, and blue singlet. That felt like the most iconic one, the “Olympic Hero” vibe.
So, the main parts I figured I needed were:
- The singlet itself
- Wrestling boots
- Knee pads
- Maybe some fake gold medals for kicks
Sounds easy on paper, right? Yeah, well.
The Singlet Struggle
Finding the singlet was the first big hurdle. You can’t just walk into a store and buy an official Kurt Angle singlet easily, not a specific old design anyway. Looked online, saw some replicas, but the prices were kinda steep, or they looked cheap and nasty. I thought, maybe I can make one? Or modify something?
Ended up finding a plain royal blue wrestling singlet for a decent price. Figured I could add the white stars and red trim myself. Big mistake thinking this would be quick. Got some white fabric paint, some red fabric strips, and some iron-on star patches. Trying to get the spacing of the stars right on the sides, like his, was a real pain. The fabric paint wasn’t as bright white as I wanted against the blue. And sewing on the red trim neatly? Let’s just say my sewing skills aren’t exactly pro level. It looked… homemade. Really homemade.
Boots and Pads
Next up, the boots. Real wrestling boots cost a bit, and I wasn’t planning on actually wrestling. Scoured the web for look-alikes. Found some tall, white lace-up boots that kinda resembled old-school wrestling or boxing boots. Not perfect, but close enough for what I was doing. They had to do the job.
Knee pads were easier. Just needed plain black ones. Found a pair of volleyball knee pads that looked the part. Slid them on, they worked. Probably the easiest part of the whole thing.
Finishing Touches – The Medals
You can’t be Kurt Angle without the gold medal, right? Obviously not getting a real one. Looked for toy Olympic medals. Found some cheap plastic ones online with a red, white, and blue ribbon. They looked super fake up close, but from a distance, they kinda sold the idea. Hung it around my neck once I had the singlet on.

Putting It All Together
So, after getting all the pieces, I tried the whole outfit on. The modified singlet felt stiff with the paint and the iron-on stars weren’t perfectly flat. The boots looked okay, pads were fine. The medal was cheesy but necessary. Standing in front of the mirror, it was… recognizable? Ish? It definitely had that DIY feel. Not ring-ready, that’s for sure, but you could tell who I was aiming for.
It took way more effort than I expected. Just goes to show, those costumes look simple on TV, but getting them right takes work, or money for the good replicas. Was a fun little project though, figuring out how to piece it all together from scratch, even if the result wasn’t exactly championship quality. Learned a bit about fabric paint and iron-on patches, I guess. Mostly learned I’m not great at sewing.
