Okay, so today I was messing around with the crossword, and I got totally stumped by this one clue: “takes the helm.” I stared at it for a good while, racking my brain. I mean, it could be so many things, right? Anything related to leading or controlling something.

First, I started thinking literally. Like, on a boat. What do you do at the helm? You steer it! I scribbled that in. Five letters. Could it be?
Trying out some ideas
I tried to work through some of the crossing words to see if “steer” fit. Some worked, some didn’t. I was getting a little frustrated. I even thought maybe it wasn’t about a boat at all? Maybe it was more about, like, taking charge of a situation?
- “Lead”? Nope, too short.
- “Control?” Too long.
- “Manage?” Also too long.
Figuring it out
But then, playing off “steer”, I tried using the intersecting letters, And guess what? It looks correct. I mean, STEER is definetly one of the best options I tested.
So yeah, that’s how I spent a chunk of my afternoon. I can describe this feeling like winning a small battle. A crossword puzzle victory! It’s the simple things, right?
