Alright, so I gotta tell you about this little project I tackled recently. My nephew, right? Huge UConn Huskies fan. His birthday was coming up, and I wanted to get him something special, something he couldn’t just buy at any store. So, I decided, “I’m gonna make him a custom UConn basketball jersey!”

First thing I did was hit the internet, searching high and low for inspiration. I needed to figure out what style jersey he’d like, what number to put on it, you know, the whole shebang. I spent a good evening just browsing images of past and present UConn jerseys.
Next up was sourcing the materials. I went to my local fabric store – Joann Fabrics, the whole deal. I was looking for that classic basketball jersey material – the kind that’s breathable and looks legit. Ended up finding a really nice navy blue athletic mesh fabric that felt just right. I also snagged some white and red fabric for the numbers and lettering.
Okay, so now came the slightly trickier part: figuring out the pattern. I didn’t have a pre-made pattern for a youth basketball jersey lying around, so I had to improvise. I took one of my nephew’s old t-shirts that fit him well and used it as a guide. I laid it out flat on some pattern paper and traced around it, adding a little extra room for the jersey fit. I adjusted the neckline to be more of a V-neck like a basketball jersey.
With the pattern sorted, I cut out the fabric pieces – the front, the back, and the side panels. This was where I started to feel like I was actually getting somewhere. I carefully pinned the pieces together and then started sewing. I used a basic straight stitch on my sewing machine to join the seams, making sure to reinforce them at the stress points.
Now for the numbers and lettering. I decided to go with his favorite player’s number, and his last name on the back. I printed out the number and letters in the correct size and font, then used them as templates to cut the white and red fabric. I carefully pinned them onto the jersey and then used a tight zigzag stitch to sew them on securely. It was a bit tedious, but I took my time to make sure everything looked clean and professional.
After all the sewing was done, I trimmed all the loose threads and gave the jersey a good pressing. I also added some ribbing around the neckline and armholes to give it that authentic jersey look. Found some matching ribbing at the fabric store, thankfully.
The final touch was adding a UConn Huskies patch to the front of the jersey. I bought an official patch online and carefully ironed it on, making sure it was centered and securely attached.
And there it was – a custom-made UConn basketball jersey for my nephew! It wasn’t perfect, but it was made with a whole lot of love. When he opened it on his birthday, his face lit up. He put it on right away and ran around pretending to be his favorite player. That made all the effort totally worth it. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Plus, I’m officially the cool uncle now, which is a bonus.
