Figuring Out the Byron Nelson Bag Rules
Alright, so I was planning to head over to the Byron Nelson tournament, pretty excited about it. But then it hit me – security at these big events can be a real pain, especially with bags. I didn’t want to get all the way there just to be turned away or have to trek back to the car.

So, the first thing I did was jump on my computer. Opened up a search engine, you know, the usual. Typed in something like “Byron Nelson what bags allowed” or “Byron Nelson bag policy”. Just wanted to get the official rules straight from the source if possible.
Found the tournament website pretty quickly, which is usually the best place for this stuff. Drilled down into their ‘Spectator Info’ or ‘Plan Your Visit’ section. Sure enough, there was a whole bit dedicated to the bag policy. Good thing I checked!
Okay, so here’s the deal I found, basically:
- Clear Bags are Key: They really push the clear bags. You know, the see-through plastic, vinyl, or PVC ones. Makes sense, security can see what’s inside quick and easy. There was a size limit too, something like 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. Not huge, but big enough for the basics.
- Small Clutches Okay Too: If you didn’t want a clear bag, you could bring a tiny clutch bag. Like, really small. They said about the size of your hand, maybe 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches. Basically just for your phone, wallet, keys.
- What’s NOT Allowed: Pretty much everything else. No backpacks, no big purses, no camera bags (unless you’re media, I guess), no coolers, none of that stuff.
Seeing this definitely made me rethink my plan. My usual small backpack was a no-go. I actually had one of those clear tote bags lying around from some other event, thankfully. Dug that out of the closet, checked the size – yep, it fit the rules. Phew.
Then I had to be strategic about packing. Wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses, a small sunscreen. That basically filled it up. Left all the other junk I might normally carry at home.
Getting Through Security
When I actually got to the tournament entrance, I was glad I’d checked ahead. The security line was moving okay, but you could definitely spot the people who hadn’t read the policy. Saw a couple folks getting pulled aside, having discussions about their bags being too big or not the right type. They either had to chuck their bag or take it all the way back to their car.
Me? I just held up my clear bag. The security person glanced at it, quick look inside, waved me through. Super simple, took like 10 seconds. It really does make a difference if you just follow the guidelines they put out.
So, yeah, that was my experience dealing with the Byron Nelson bag policy. It’s a bit strict, but honestly, it’s pretty standard for big sporting events these days. Just do yourself a favor and look it up before you go. Grab a cheap clear bag if you need to. It saves a ton of headache at the gate and lets you get right to enjoying the golf.
