Okay, so today I finally got around to tackling something I’ve put off for ages. You know that box, the one stuffed in the back of the closet? Yeah, that one. Full of old baseball cards. I saw something about Derek Jeter the other day, reminded me I thought I had a card or two of his somewhere in that mess.

Getting Started
First off, actually digging out the box was step one. Man, it was dusty. Coughed a bit, not gonna lie. Dragged it out into the living room where I had some space. Popped it open. It smelled like old paper and, well, history, I guess. Just a jumble of cards, mostly loose, some in crumbling old team bags.
The Sorting Process
I figured I needed a system. So, I started making piles.
- Commons: The guys you barely remember. This pile got big, fast.
- Maybe Stars: Players who were decent, maybe had a few good years.
- Keepers/Stars: The ones I actually recognized and liked, or thought might be worth looking at closer.
Went through them one by one. Lotta junk wax era stuff, you know? Tons of cards printed back then. Found some Ken Griffey Jr. cards, always liked him. A few Frank Thomas cards too. But I kept thinking, where’s that Jeter card? I was pretty sure it was an early one, maybe not his absolute rookie, but close.
My fingers were getting kinda grimy from handling all that old cardboard. Took longer than I expected, just sifting through. You get lost in it sometimes, seeing names you haven’t thought about in years.
Finding the Jeter Card
Then, maybe halfway through the box, tucked between a couple of Mariners cards, there it was. The Derek Jeter card I was hunting for. Wasn’t the super famous ’93 SP rookie everyone dreams about, unfortunately. It was a different early one, but definitely him. That classic Yankees pinstripe look.
Pulled it out carefully. Looked it over. Condition wasn’t mint, you know? Corners maybe a little soft, edges showed a tiny bit of wear. But still, looked pretty good overall. No major creases or anything horrible. Felt good finding it, like ‘Mission Accomplished’. I immediately grabbed one of those soft sleeves and a top loader I keep handy and slid it in there for protection. Better safe than sorry.
Wrapping Up
So yeah, that was my little project today. Spent a good chunk of the afternoon sorting through cardboard memories. Found the Derek Jeter baseball card I was after, which felt pretty satisfying. It’s not gonna fund my retirement, but it’s cool to have, brings back some good baseball memories. Got it safe in a holder now. The rest of the box… well, it’s slightly more organized now. Maybe I’ll tackle actually cataloging the ‘keepers’ pile another day. Or maybe it’ll just sit there until I get another random urge. We’ll see.
