Okay, so I wanted to talk about something I spent some time on recently, looking into the work of Kami Schlossnagle. It wasn’t like a huge project or anything, just me exploring something new that caught my eye.

It started pretty randomly. I was just browsing around, looking at different art styles online, you know how it is. And then some pieces popped up that just had this distinct feel. I dug a bit and found the name Kami Schlossnagle associated with them. What really got me was the way color and maybe the atmosphere were handled. It felt different from the usual stuff you see everywhere.
Getting Started with It
So, first thing I did was just gather some images. Saved a bunch of pieces I liked into a folder on my computer. Didn’t really have a plan, just wanted to look at them, absorb the vibe. Spent maybe an evening just clicking through, zooming in, trying to figure out what made them tick.
What stood out to me were a few things:
- The color choices. Sometimes really bold, sometimes kinda muted, but always seemed very intentional.
- Texture. It wasn’t always obvious, but there often seemed to be a subtle texture that added depth.
- The mood. A lot of the pieces had this specific kind of mood, sometimes calm, sometimes a bit mysterious.
Trying Things Out
Looking is one thing, but I always find I learn more by doing. So, I opened up my usual digital drawing setup. Nothing fancy. I wasn’t trying to perfectly copy anything, more like trying to capture a similar feeling or technique.
I picked one piece that wasn’t too complicated and decided to focus on the colors. I tried mixing similar shades, layering them like I thought they might have been done. It was harder than I thought. Getting the colors to feel right together, that specific harmony, took a lot of trial and error. Played around with different brushes too, trying to get a hint of that texture I noticed.
Honestly, my first few attempts were pretty clumsy. The colors looked muddy, or the balance was just off. But it’s part of the process, right? You gotta mess up to figure things out. I spent a good couple of hours just tweaking, erasing, starting over on certain parts.
What I Took Away
After messing around for a while, I didn’t end up with a masterpiece or anything. But I felt like I understood the approach a bit better. It wasn’t about specific brushes or secret tricks, seemed more about the careful thought put into the color relationships and the overall composition.
It was a good exercise. Made me think more consciously about my own color choices, even in the simple stuff I do day-to-day. It’s useful to step outside your comfort zone and just try to understand how someone else creates a certain effect. Even if you don’t adopt their style wholesale, you pick up little ideas.

So yeah, that was my little dive into Kami Schlossnagle’s work. Just me, my computer, and trying to figure out some cool art. Always good to stay curious and keep experimenting.
