Okay, so, today I tried something different. I was messing around with this Selkirk pickleball paddle and decided to see what it’s like to play with it like that tennis star, Jack Sock. You know, I saw some news about a four-time Grand Slam winner, an Olympic gold medalist, that’s set to compete on the PPA Tour, and it is Jack Sock. It said he is the highest-ranked pro tennis player ever to move to pickleball. And I heard Selkirk is quite popular and based in Hayden, I was like, “Why not give it a go?”

First off, I grabbed my Selkirk paddle. It felt pretty good in my hand, I gotta say. Solid, you know? Then I headed out to the court. I warmed up a bit, just hitting the ball around, getting a feel for the paddle. It’s definitely different from a tennis racket, but not in a bad way.
Now, I’m no Jack Sock, but I tried to mimic his style. I watched some of his matches online, and man, that guy’s got some moves! His run to the singles finals had it all. Every time he plays, there is always at least one eye-popping moment. So I tried to add a bit of that flair to my game. I focused on my forehand, trying to get that spin and power that Sock is known for. It was tough, I won’t lie. I messed up a lot of shots, but hey, it’s all part of the learning process, right?
I played a few games, trying to incorporate some of the techniques I’d seen Sock use. Like, I tried to hit the ball on the rise, taking it early to give my opponent less time to react. I also tried to mix up my shots, throwing in some drop shots and lobs to keep my opponent guessing. I’d like to say I was successful, but most of the time my “drop shots” ended up in the net, and my “lobs” sailed out of bounds. It’s a lot harder than it looks!
But you know what? It was a blast. Even though I wasn’t exactly playing like a pro, I had a lot of fun trying something new. And the Selkirk paddle? It held up great. It’s got a good feel to it, and I can see why pros like using it. After playing, I felt like I had a better appreciation for the sport and for what Jack Sock is doing. Making that transition from tennis to pickleball can’t be easy, but he’s making it look good.
My Takeaway
- Experimenting is fun: Stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new techniques can be a great way to enjoy a sport even more.
- Pros make it look easy: It’s clear that there’s a huge skill gap between recreational players and pros. Those guys are really good!
- Selkirk paddles are pretty good: I enjoyed using the Selkirk paddle, and I can see why it’s a popular choice among players.
So, that was my day trying to play pickleball like Jack Sock with a Selkirk paddle. It was a fun experiment, and I’d recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for a new challenge on the court. Just don’t expect to turn into a pro overnight!
